Superstar Aamir Khan starrer film ‘Dangal’ is one of the most profitable films of Bollywood. This film, which has grossed over Rs 2,000 crore at the global box office, must have filled the pockets of the producers a lot, but the Phogat family did not make much profit from this film.
‘Dangal’, the story of a former wrestling champion and his wrestling daughters, made big bucks from India to China. The story of this film was based on the Phogat family, considered iconic in Indian wrestling. But wrestler and politician Babita Phogat, who comes from the same family, has now said that it was her sport that gave her popularity, not the film ‘Dangal’. Babita also said that the Phogat family did not get any significant financial benefit from this film.
The Phogat family received only this amount of money for ‘Dangal’
In an interview with News 24, Babita told how much money the makers of ‘Dangal’ had given to her family for the rights to make the film. Babita said the amount given by the makers to her family was less than 1% of the film’s box office collection.
When asked if the makers of ‘Dangal’ had given Rs 20 crore to the Phogat family, as is often said in reports. Babita then said that the amount the family received was “half of 10% of Rs 20 million”. However, Babita also clarified that this agreement of the Phogat family was with the film’s director Nitish Tiwari when he was writing the script of the film. At that time, Aamir Khan was not associated with this project as a producer.
Aamir’s team wanted to change the names of the characters.
Babita said, “My father had only said one thing: we need people’s love and respect, let’s leave everything else.” He further said that his name had become a household name because of the people and not because of the film. Babita also told that when Aamir Khan joined this film, his team advised changing the names of the characters. But his father Mahavir Phogat was not ready for it.
Making another revelation, Babita said that when ‘Dangal’ became a huge commercial success, her father had also proposed Aamir’s team to open a wrestling academy in Haryana. But this matter could not go beyond discussion. He said: “We were in talks with his team to open an academy.” But he neither said yes nor refused.
