Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Center should accept the Supreme Court’s decision, in which it banned Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The 1967 decision on minority status has been rejected.
The Supreme Court on Friday referred the case related to AMU’s minority status to a new bench and set aside the 1967 ruling that said the university could not be considered a minority institution as established by a central law.
Owaisi’s tweet
Owaisi wrote in ‘X’: “This is an important day for Indian Muslims. In the 1967 decision, AMU’s minority status was rejected when in fact it had equal status. Article 30 states that minorities have right to establish their educational institutions in the way they see fit.” Congratulating the students and teachers of AMU, he said: “The right of minorities to educate themselves has been respected.”
BJP targets madrassas
Owaisi alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made all-out efforts to attack AMU, Jamia University and even madrassas and that the party “should now introspect”. He said the Center should help AMU as it is also a central university. He said Jamia gets Rs 3 lakh per student, AMU gets Rs 3.9 lakh per student, while Banaras Hindu University (BHU) gets Rs 6.15 lakh per student. ” (PTI input-language)
