An informed Hamas source told AFP: “Hamas leaders believe that Yahya Sinwar’s successor will not be chosen until the next elections in March. This will only be possible if conditions are favorable.”

The committee will take control of Hamas
The source said the five-member committee, which was formed in August following the assassination of political chief Ismail Haniya in Tehran, “will assume leadership of the group.” The committee was formed in view of the difficulty of communication with Sinwar before his death in Gaza. The committee includes representatives from the two Palestinian territories and the community. Sinwar’s successor will face the challenge of guiding policy regarding internationally brokered talks for a ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages. The United States and Israel had accused Sinwar of deliberately avoiding reaching an agreement on a ceasefire. Sinwar refused to give in to Israel’s harsh and unacceptable demands.

The threat of Al-Hayya
In a video statement on Friday, Khalil al-Hayya, deputy leader of Hamas’ Qatar-based politburo, said Israel would regret killing Sinwar. Hayya said Sinwar’s “martyrdom” would only strengthen the terrorist group. A senior Hamas official said the hostages will not be released until the aggression against our people in Gaza stops. Of the 251 hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 97 are believed to still be in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34 people declared dead by the IDF.
