Lebanon Tuesday, November 12, 2024: Sister Maya L. Bino, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, visited Ain, just three miles from the Israeli border, according to a report from Aid to The Church in Need (ACN) decided to stay at the Monastery of San José de Abel. “There are still about 9,000 Christians here in three different towns. We are under constant threat,” a missionary sister told AIN by phone.
Much attention has been focused on those fleeing the attacks, but he emphasized that many Christians have been left behind because they fear losing their homes forever if they leave.
He said: “There is no hospital in the area, no Red Cross and we only have electricity for three hours a day. That means no Internet.” [और] There is no water!
Despite the ongoing conflict, many families have returned to their homes after initially fleeing.
Sister Mary said many people had left at the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, but the rising cost of living in Beirut and the emotional stress of separation from family members left behind in the south had forced many families to return. . The violence has also affected education in the area. The Convent of San José runs the only Catholic school serving 32 nearby towns. However, due to airstrikes, in-person teaching had to be suspended. “They saw how Israel attacked two schools in Gaza. The children were not safe here,” said Sister Maya, the school’s principal.
“The situation is terrible. People are still suffering from the trauma of the 2006 war and there is great fear that bridges and roads will be bombed again, especially now that there is talk of a ground invasion.”
ACN reported that it had provided vital assistance to the struggling community, providing medical assistance to 1,200 residents living in Ain Abel.
Additionally, Catholic Charities International has distributed food packages to thousands of families in need in southern Lebanon, providing essential assistance amid the ongoing conflict.
ACN Chief Executive Regina Lynch said: “[हम प्रार्थना करते हैं] May your love and compassion touch the hearts of the warring parties, inspiring them to seek a peaceful solution, so that justice and reconciliation may reign in the Holy Land and beyond.”
