Fifty-five people have been arrested for attacking officials during a protest against land acquisition for proposed units of pharmaceutical companies in a village in Telangana’s Vikarabad district. The police gave this information on Tuesday. The entire ruckus took place at Lagacharla village in Dudayala mandal, which falls under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s Kodangal assembly headquarters.

Three officers were injured

Three officials, an additional district magistrate, Kodangal Area Development Authority (KDA) chairman and a DSP rank police officer, were injured when they were allegedly attacked by some villagers at Lagacharla village in Dudyala mandal. Monday, police said.

The Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) proposed to hold a public hearing outside the village, but meanwhile a leader of the youth wing of Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) approached district magistrate Prateek Jain and told him that he had requested to come so that farmers can give their opinion.

The police said that accepting this request, the district magistrate went to the village along with other officials to hear the opinion of the farmers. Where he met a crowd. The protesters pelted stones at the vehicles of Jain and other district administration officials.

55 people in custody

A senior police officer said ’55 people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the incident. Police are investigating how many of them were involved in the attack. He said the BRS youth wing leader who had allegedly instigated people to this “pre-planned attack” is absconding.

According to the police, three FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident. Internet services have also been suspended in Dudyala mandal. Police said the situation is now under control. Additional police have been deployed to the scene. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
