Irfan Solanki
For Irfan Solanki, former Sisamau assembly MP from Kanpur, Thursday was a day of happiness and sadness. The Allahabad High Court granted bail to Irfan Solanki but refused to suspend the sentence. In such a situation, there is no problem in holding elections in Sisamau now.
Irfan Solanki was charged with arson, following which the Kanpur AP-MLA Court sentenced Irfan Solanki to 7 years in prison. As per rules, Irfan Solanki had lost his MLA as his imprisonment was more than two years. After this, along with other seats, by-elections will also be held in Sisamau seat in Kanpur. Irfan’s wife Naseem Solanki is the SP candidate.
Irfan had reached the Supreme Court
Irfan had filed an appeal in the High Court against the seven-year sentence. In that case, the suspension of the sentence and the granting of bail were requested. In this case, the hearing was repeatedly postponed in the High Court, against which Irfan had filed a petition in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had directed the High Court to complete the hearing in 10 days. Since then, the High Court held uninterrupted hearings every day.
While on the one hand Irfan was asking for a suspension of the sentence, on the other the government was demanding that the sentence be changed to life imprisonment. Issuing its order on Thursday, the High Court ordered to grant bail to Irfan Solanki. Irfan was granted bail, but currently the High Court has refused to suspend the sentence.
There is no crisis in the by-elections
Despite getting bail relief, Irfan Solanki is not likely to come out of jail at this time. Apart from arson, Irfan is yet to get bail for the gangster letter cases and Aadhaar. After this decision, it has at least been confirmed that there is no longer a crisis in the Sisamau by-elections.
