Aurangabad: Auto driver Zameer Shaikh (50) wants to see the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in power in Maharashtra, but when it comes to his own constituency, Aurangabad East, he wants Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM to win here. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) enjoys significant support from Muslims in the city, which was once the capital of the erstwhile Nizam-ruled region. The city has a large Muslim population and the party is trying to fulfill its ambition of emerging as the voice of the community across the state.
AIMIM contests elections for 16 seats
Of the 16 seats the party is contesting in the state’s 288-member assembly, two are in the area now officially called Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Its former MP Imtiaz Jalil is contesting from Aurangabad East, while its candidate from Aurangabad Central is Nasir Siddiqui.
“The votes will not be divided”
District president and party builder Sameer Sajid dismissed questions about division in Muslim votes. Their unity helped Maha Vikas Aghadi achieve a huge victory in the Lok Sabha elections. He said, “We did not participate in the elections in Haryana. So, did Congress win? ”He said that AIMIM was contesting for 52 seats in 2019 and now compared to that, this time it is contesting for only 16 seats. Many Muslims praised the decision, saying it would ensure their votes were not divided. (with language inputs)
