Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti 2024 | Guru Nanak Dev was the founder of Sikhism and the first guru of the Sikhs. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Prakash Parv or Guru Parv. Nanak ji was born in a village called Talwandi situated on the banks of River Ravi in Pakistan (Punjab). He was born on Kartik Purnima day in 1469.
This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Sikhism. He was born to father Kalyan or Mehta Kalu ji and mother Trupti Devi. In Sikhism it is believed that Nanak Dev Ji was blessed with special powers from childhood. He learned a lot from his sister Nanaki. At the age of 16 he married Bibi Sulkhni.
Sulkhani ji resided in Lakhauki in Gurdaspur district of Punjab (India). He had two children, Srichand and Lakhmi Chand. Soon after the birth of these two children, Nanak ji left on a pilgrimage. He traveled very long distances. Mardana, Lahna, Bala and Ramdas also accompanied him on this journey. He traveled until 1521.
During this trip he used to preach to everyone and sensitize them against social evils. He visited many places in India, Afghanistan and Arabia. These trips are called “udasiyaans” in Punjabi.
Guru Nanak ji camped in many places during his travels. He opposed social evils. He considered idol worship useless and opposed conservative thought. He spent the latter part of his life in Kartarpur, Pakistan. Kartapur is a sacred religious place for Sikhs.
Guru Nanak Ji died on Jyoti Jot on September 22, 1539, but he left behind the three basic principles of his life for the followers of Sikhism: Naam Japo, Kirat Karo and Vand Chhako. At Kartarpur, the divine light of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was absorbed by the earth. Before his death, he succeeded his disciple Bhai Lahna, who later became known as Guru Angad Dev. He is the second guru of the Sikhs.
