Indian Railways
India will introduce its first hydrogen-powered train in December 2024, marking a significant step towards green travel. This hydrogen-powered train, which runs without diesel or electricity, is considered a major achievement for Indian Railways as it brings them one step closer to their goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. Tell us some details about this train.
The train will travel through the air.
This hydrogen-powered train will be the first train in the country that will use water as the main resource to generate electricity. Unlike traditional diesel or electric engines, it uses hydrogen. This means that it can now be said that Indian Railways has prepared a train that runs through the air. Hydrogen fuel cells combine with oxygen to generate electricity with only steam and water as byproducts, resulting in zero harmful emissions. This focus on clean energy is expected to set the standard for future trains in India.
The dream railway project
The hydrogen train is part of Indian Railways’ dream project, which aims to reduce carbon footprint and eliminate air pollution caused by diesel engines. The use of hydrogen fuel cells allows the train to avoid emitting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates, making it one of the most sustainable forms of transport available.

This is the future plan of Railways
In addition to being environmentally friendly, hydrogen-powered trains produce 60 percent less noise than diesel engines. With plans to operate 35 hydrogen trains across the country, Indian Railways is preparing for a cleaner, quieter future. The trial of the hydrogen train will be carried out on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, which will cover a distance of 90 kilometres. Additional routes being considered include traditional mountain railways such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway and others in scenic and remote areas of India.
