Mythological story of Kartik Purnima (Kartik Purnima katha)
Once upon a time, in ancient times, the demon Tripura performed severe penance on Prayagraj for one lakh years. Due to the effect of his penance, all inanimate beings, living beings and gods were frightened. The gods sent nymphs to break the penance but they could not achieve it. Pleased with the demon Tripura’s penance, Lord Brahma himself appeared before him and asked him to ask for a blessing.
Tripura asked for a blessing: “May I not die either at the hands of gods or at the hands of humans.” Thanks to this blessing, Tripura started committing atrocities without fear. Not only this, but he also climbed Mount Kailash. After this there was a war between Lord Shankar and Tripura. In the end, Lord Shiva destroyed Tripura with the help of Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu.
