Fake news and totally fake videos go viral every day on social media. People easily believe such news and pass it on. People should be careful with these fake news. Meanwhile, a post discussing the fertility rate based on religion is going viral on social media platform X. In addition to this, citing the fertility rate figures in the post, it has been stated why a “Population Control Law” is necessary in the country as soon as possible. When we investigated it, we discovered that the claim being made is false. In this, the figures of the fertility rate of the Muslim community have been misstated.

What information came to light in the fact check?
When we compared the data provided in this post with the 2019-2021 NFHS report to investigate the viral claim, we found many discrepancies in them. In the viral post, the fertility rate of Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains and Buddhists is correct, while the fertility rate of Muslims has been manipulated. The latest NFHS report puts the fertility rate of Muslims at 2.36.

After looking at old NFHS reports, we found that the fertility figures for Muslims given in the viral post match the 1992-93 figures. The following table compares fertility rates by religion in the first and fifth NFHS reports.

Although the fertility rate of the Muslim community is higher than that of other religions even in the NFHS-5, analysis of the data shows that the fertility rate of the Muslim community has decreased the most.
