Delhi- In a significant step to strengthen India’s defense manufacturing and operational capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to revive operations at its Nashik plant. The decision follows a large production order worth $1.3 billion approved in September 2023 for the manufacture of 12 new Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. In addition to the new production order, the Air Force is preparing to comprehensively upgrade 84 existing Su-30MKI fighter aircraft under the ambitious ‘Super Sukhoi’ program approved by the Defense Acquisition Council and awaiting final approval by the Cabinet Security Committee. The upgraded ‘Super Sukhoi’ aircraft will include an advanced radar system with a range of 1.5 to 1.7 times greater than existing models, Infrared Search and Track (IRST) sensors developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and next-generation mission computers. Advanced Electronic Warfare Suite Advanced cockpit design and modern weapons systems will ensure these aircraft can operate in high-threat environments, placing them in the category of fifth-generation fighters. Additionally, the integration of manned and unmanned teaming (MUM-T) technology will allow these aircraft to coordinate with combat and surveillance drones. The timeline for completing the ‘Super Sukhoi’ upgrade program is expected to extend to several years. which will begin shortly after final government approval. Experts expect the entire modernization effort to unfold over the next 8 to 10 years, ensuring a gradual improvement of the Air Force’s capabilities. Deliveries of the new Su-30MKI aircraft are expected to begin from the Nashik plant in the coming years, providing an immediate boost to the IAF’s operational fleet.
