I hadn’t thought about this before. But now that you say it, I can feel it. The special thing about Basu da and Hrishikesh Mukherjee was that they made films about the common man. His stories were definitely about middle class people. But he never presented him as “poor.” Even at the age of 69, Vijay did not consider himself weak, but the world around him was trying to prove that he was old. We never talk about this. Is it difficult to portray characters that look natural on screen?
Yes, I think it is very difficult to play the character of a common man. Because he never tries to be a hero. I have played many everyman characters in my career. Be it Khosla Ka Ghosla, Saransh or Vijay 69, these are all stories of common people. If you see it, its story is special despite being common and it is a difficult task to show it on screen. But the reason why people like Vijay 69 is something else.
If ‘Vijay 69’ had been made by any other director other than Akshay Oberoi, people wouldn’t have liked it as much. People like ‘Vijay 69’ because of Akshay’s sensitivity. I have received thousands of messages about this film and it is not just from middle class people, but people from all sectors of society participate in it. Everyone feels like this is their story. This is the story of every person who proves their existence.
Regarding this film, why were you confident that people would like this story?
People tell me in ‘Vijay 69’ that no one else could have done this performance except you. We can’t see anyone else in this character. I was sure that I could bring this film to people’s hearts and there can be no greater proof than the fact that today 99.99 percent of people tell me that no one could have played this role better than you.
What was the most difficult thing while preparing for this character?
I have played this character at the age of 69 and physically it was not easy to play him. Because this person is still active in normal life and also practices triathlon. But after reading 2 lines of this movie, I said yes to doing it. When the team asked me the reason, I said that my mother says that only one grain is enough to see if the rice is cooked or not.
