India to host World Para Athletics Championships for the first time in 2025: Report

India will host the World Para Athletics Championships next year. This mega event will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in November 2025.

According to The Times of India, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has signed an agreement with World Para Athletics, a branch of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), to host a major event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, possibly in November. It’s going to happen. With more than 100 countries expected to participate, this global event will further enhance India’s position in athlete sports.

The report further added that the mega event is expected to cost between Rs 40-50 crore and will involve significant improvements to the JLN stadium over the next six months. A new synthetic track will be installed to meet World Para Athletics standards. Additionally, PCI has submitted an application for No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Government of India, while the required payment of accommodation guarantee has already been made to the international body.

“This will be the biggest sporting event in India for para-athletes,” a PCI official told the newspaper. This will be something very important for them. More than 1,000 para-athletes from all over the world will come here to show their talents. “Last year we organized the Parashooting World Cup in New Delhi and it was a huge success.”

Meanwhile, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) awarded the contract for the renovation of the JLN Stadium in preparation for the Paralympic World Cup. As the host nation, India is expected to field a large team, reflecting its commitment to the advancement of sport for people with disabilities. In the last Paraworld Championship held in Kobe, Japan, in 2024, India achieved notable success, finishing sixth in the overall medal tally. The Indian team won a total of 17 medals, including six gold, five silver and six bronze, marking the country’s best performance so far in the championship.
