The volume of freight traffic on the dedicated freight corridors has increased in the current financial year and is double the level of the previous year. This is helping the corridor, whose eastern and western sections came into operation last year, increase its share of the total freight volume handled by the country’s rail network. According to official sources of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), between April and October 2024, cargo movement measured in net ton kilometers (NTKM) in the corridor amounted to 62,282 million, which is equivalent to 292.4 millions per day. .
The corresponding figure last year was 32.164 million or 151 million per day. The doubling of freight traffic is as 522 km of the DFC network (294 km in the Eastern DFC and 228 km in the Western DFC) will become operational in FY24.
“Once the remaining 102km stretch in Western DFC is completed by the end of 2025, we expect a 20% growth in freight traffic. “Traffic revenue for fiscal 2025 is also expected to surpass the previous record by a huge margin.”
