Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Chowk has changed its name. It will now be known as Birsa Munda Chowk. This was announced by Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Sarai Kale Khan (now Birsa Munda Chowk) is near ISBT, Delhi. The central government announced the change on Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the grand statue of Birsa Munda in Bansera Udyan on his birth anniversary, which is celebrated as ‘Tribal Pride Day’.
On this occasion, Home Minister Amit Shah said, ‘Birsa Munda revived the values of water, forest and land and said this is all for the tribals. He brought many types of consciousness to society.
He further said that in the year 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced to celebrate Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary as ‘Tribal Pride Day’. On this day Birsa Munda was born in a small town in Jharkhand. On the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, the Central Government has decided to rename Sarai Kale Khan Chowk as ‘Birsa Munda Chowk’. Tell us who Birsa Munda was and his contribution.
Who was Birsa Munda?
Birsa Munda was a great tribal freedom fighter who fought against British rule. It is also known as ‘Ulagu Munda’ or ‘Dharti Aaba’. He belonged to the Munda tribe of Chhotanagpur and united the tribes against British rule. Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 in Ulihatu village in Ranchi district of Bengal Presidency, now in Khunti district of Jharkhand.

The idea behind changing the name of Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan Chowk to Birsa Munda Chowk was to pay tribute to a great freedom fighter like Birsa Munda. This decision was made to remember his contribution and inspire the younger generation about him.
Who was Kale Khan?
Kale Khan was a 14th century Sufi saint who gave his name to this square. The name of Kale Khan, born during the time of Sher Shah Suri (1472 to 1545), was associated with this shelter i.e. Sarai located in Delhi during the Mughal rule and with this, this Sarai came to be called Kale Khan. There is also a tomb of Sufi saint Kale Khan on the way to Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi.
