Historic victory for the NPP in Sri Lanka
Formation of the new Sri Lankan government: In Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections, the “National People’s Power” party (NPP) recorded a historic victory and secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament. With this victory, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will announce the new prime minister and the new cabinet on Monday. The NPP has established its dominance across the country, including the Tamil-dominated Jaffna constituency. This unprecedented victory of the PNP has added a new chapter in the country’s politics.
PNP chief spokesperson Tilvin Silva informed reporters that the new government’s cabinet could be limited to 25 ministers. However, he also clarified that the number of ministers is likely to be limited to 23 or 24. According to Article 46 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the number of cabinet ministers can be up to a maximum of 30, while the number of vice ministers is limited to 40. Silva said more vice ministers may be needed to handle the responsibilities of the large ministries.
So far only three ministers in the government
The PNP has always advocated for a small and strong government in its electoral campaign. The party believes that administrative costs can be reduced by keeping the size of government small. After the PNP’s victory in the presidential elections held in September, the government until now consisted of the president and three ministers. With the formation of the new government, measures will be taken to make the administrative system more efficient and powerful.
Great performance of the PNP: it obtained 61.56 percent of the votes
In the parliamentary elections, the PNP obtained a total of 61.56 percent of the votes, which demonstrates the growing popularity of the party and its credibility among the people. The PNP has also performed brilliantly in the Jaffna constituency, the stronghold of Tamil minorities. The party’s success in this area points to a new direction in Sri Lanka’s political landscape. This support for the PNP among the public is based on its promises of economic reforms, good governance and regional unity.
