CRPF Director General Anish Dayal arrived in Imphal amid violence in Manipur. At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with senior officials in Delhi. Protesters turned violent in several parts of the Imphal Valley on Saturday following the discovery of the bodies of three women and three children in Jiribam district, leading to an indefinite curfew. Officials said protesters set fire to the houses of Public Works Minister Govinddas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, BJP MLA from Hyanglam Y Radheshyam in Langmeidong Bazaar, BJP MLA Paonam Brozen from Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district and Congress MLA Lokeshwar from Khundrakpam in Imphal East district. Police said the angry mob broke into the residential compounds of the MLAs, vandalized properties and set houses on fire. However, during this time the MLA and his family members were not present at home.

Attempted attack on CM’s residence

According to authorities, in these incidents the houses were partially burned. Firefighters arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control before the houses burned completely. Protesters also tried to attack Biren Singh’s ancestral residence at Luwangsangbam in Imphal East area on Saturday night, but security forces stopped them 100 to 200 meters ahead of time. Officials said security personnel, including Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF) and state forces, fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters and foiled an attempt to damage Singh’s house. The angry mob then burnt tires and blocked movement of vehicles on the main road leading to Biren Singh’s residence, he said.

Violent demonstration until 11 p.m.

Officials said the protest continued till around 11 pm in Mantrapukhri area, about three to four kilometers from the Chief Minister’s ancestral house. He told PTI that the protesters who attacked the chief minister’s ancestral house were from other constituencies and not Hingang assembly constituency. Chief Minister Biren represents the Hingang headquarters. The situation here remained calm but tense on Sunday morning due to violent protests in the Imphal Valley following the recovery of bodies of six people in Jiribam. Along with this, indefinite curfew has been imposed in the valley and internet services have also been suspended. The bodies of two women and a child were recovered from the Barak river in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Saturday, while the bodies of a woman and two children were found on Friday night. The militants allegedly killed them after kidnapping them.

There was a meeting between security forces and militants

Three women and three children living in a relief camp went missing after a clash broke out between security forces and militants in Jiribam district on Monday. 10 militants were also killed in this encounter. A day earlier, in the Imphal Valley, people staged violent protests against the killing and also attacked the residences of three ministers and six MPs from the state. Police said the protesters vandalized the houses of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s son-in-law and three MLAs, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA RK Imo, and set their properties on fire.
