Nigeria on Sunday honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its second highest national award – the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger award. Prime Minister Modi has become the second foreign dignitary to receive this honour. Prior to this, Queen Elizabeth is the only foreign dignitary to be honored with this award in 1969.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude after receiving the award from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said it is a great honor for him to be awarded the “Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger” by Nigeria.

He said he accepts it with great humility and dedicates it to the 140 crore people of India and the friendship between India and Nigeria. The Prime Minister thanked the government and people of Nigeria for the appointment of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Prime Minister Modi said this while receiving the award.
We inform you that Prime Minister Modi received the 17th such international award abroad. Modi said relations between India and Nigeria are based on goodwill, mutual cooperation and respect.
He said that as two vibrant democracies with dynamic economies, we are working together for the well-being of the people of both countries.
Modi said that in his meetings with Nigerian leaders he discussed in detail how to further strengthen and expand mutual cooperation. He said that new possibilities have been identified in the economy, agriculture, security, fintech, energy, small and medium-sized businesses and cultural sectors.
Relations between Nigeria and India are based on cooperation
Modi said Nigeria has a huge and positive role in Africa and close cooperation with Africa has been a high priority for India.
He said India and Nigeria will move forward together for the prosperity of the people of both countries and the entire African continent. We will give importance to the interests and priorities of the Global South, working in close coordination.
Prime Minister Modi Modi is in Nigeria on the first leg of his three-nation tour at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It has been 17 years since any Indian has arrived in Nigeria. In this regard, Prime Minister Modi was received very warmly.
