The alliance of the People’s National Party (NPP) and the BJP has ended in Manipur. The NPP has withdrawn its support for Biren Singh’s government. In a letter to BJP national president JP Nadda, the NPP said the Biren Singh government has failed to stop the violence in Manipur.

The National People’s Party, led by Conrad Sangma, has expressed deep concern over the prevailing law and order situation in the state. The party said that, dissatisfied with the way the crisis was handled and the loss of innocent lives, it announced it would withdraw support for the government with immediate effect.

What was written in the letter?

The letter issued by the NPP said: “We strongly believe that the Manipur State Government under the leadership of Biren Singh has failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. Considering the current situation, the NPP has decided to withdraw its support the Biren Singh-led government in the state of Manipur with immediate effect.” Violence has broken out once again in Manipur. There is a conflict here between the Meitei people and the Kuki community since May last year, which has once again taken a violent form. Continuous demonstrations are taking place here after the deaths of three children and three women.

Biren Singh government will not fall

Breaking the alliance with the NPP is a serious blow for the BJP. However, the BJP government will continue in the state. The BJP still has a majority in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. The BJP currently has 37 seats, up from 31 for a majority. This includes five MLAs from Janata Dal (United), which joined the BJP in late 2022. Apart from this, the BJP also has the support of five MLAs from the Naga People’s Front (NPF), one MLA from the JD(U) and three independent MLAs.
