Kerala Goods and Services Tax (GST) department officials have seized 104 kg of unaccounted gold worth approximately Rs 75 crore as part of a special operation. This campaign called ‘Tower of Gold’ is being considered as the largest campaign of its kind in the state. The name is derived from a Spanish word meaning “golden tower.”
The operation began on Wednesday night and continued on Thursday, involving more than 700 officials. They raided and inspected around 78 places, including manufacturing facilities and jewelery houses, across central Kerala district. Officials said the intelligence wing of the state GST department has been investigating GST fraud committed by jewelery manufacturers for the last six months.
According to official sources, the authorities found significant irregularities in billing and taxation processes in addition to seizing 104 kilograms of gold. Earlier, sources had said that 120 kg of unaccounted gold was seized during the raid.
Extensive raids were carried out under the supervision of GST Special Commissioner Abraham Ren S. Sources said that to ensure confidentiality, officials from across the state were called to Thrissur on the pretext of a training program and taken to various places. on buses with banners that said study trip.
