The Pope prays for world peace and for all victims of religious persecution

At Sunday’s Angelus, Pope Francis called for peace in conflict zones, solidarity with marginalized peoples, and prayerful action against injustice and abuse.

Vatican News

Vatican City, Sunday, November 17, 2024 (Rei): After the Angelus, the Pope recalled several events. “Yesterday in Scutari two martyrs were beatified: Luigi Palic, priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and the diocesan priest Gjon Gazzulli, victim of religious persecution in the 20th century,” he said, recalling the new beatifications.

And today in Freiburg another Bresgovian martyr has been beatified, Father Max Joseph Metzger, founder of a secular institute dedicated to Christ the King who faced opposition from Nazism for his religious commitment to peace. The example of these martyrs will console many Christians discriminated against for their faith in our time. The Holy Father then honored the new blessed with palms.

memory of poverty

Today we celebrate the World Day of the Poor, whose theme is “The prayers of the poor reach God.” (Acts 21:5) “I thank those in the dioceses and parishes who have promoted efforts of solidarity with the most disadvantaged,” the Pope said. He also remembered the victims of traffic accidents and called for prayers for them, saying: “Let us pray for them and their families and do our part to prevent accidents.”

By putting the poor before the Pope, the Pope encouraged people to ask themselves: “Everyone can ask themselves this question: Do I deprive myself of something to give to the poor? When I give alms, do I touch the poor person’s hand and look him in the eye? “We must not forget that the poor cannot wait!”

Day of Prayer for Victims

The Italian Church has proposed on Monday a day of prayer for victims and survivors of abuse. Joining the Italian Church, the Pope said: “Every abuse is a betrayal of faith, it is a betrayal of life! Prayer is necessary to “recover faith.”

The Pope also recalled World Fisheries Day, which will be celebrated next Thursday. The Pope said: “On this occasion I would like to remember all the fishermen. May Mary, the Star of the Sea, protect the fishermen and their families.”

Next, the Holy Father greeted all the pilgrims and tourists arriving from Rome, Italy, Italy and abroad.

World Peace Metta

He then called for prayers for world peace in view of the ongoing wars in various parts of the world, saying: “Come, let us pray for peace: for those who suffer in Ukraine, in Palestine, in Israel, in Lebanon, in Myanmar and in Sudan. “War dehumanizes us and forces us to endure unacceptable crimes.” Reiterating his call to governments, he said: “Governments should listen to the calls of the people who demand peace.”

At the end he asked for prayers for him and wished everyone a happy Sunday.
