History of Ganadheep Sankashti Chaturthi Fast

According to mythology, Lord Ram’s father Dasharatha was a great king in Tretayuga. He really liked to hunt. Once, unknowingly, a Brahmin named Shravan Kumar was murdered. The blind parents of that Brahmin cursed King Dasaratha saying that just as we are dying due to separation from our son, similarly you will also die due to separation from our son. The king became very angry at this. He performed Putreshti Yagya. As a result, Jagadishwar incarnated there in the form of Ram. While Bhagwati Lakshmi appeared in the form of Janaki.

After receiving permission from his father Lord Ram, his wife Sita and brother Lakshman went to the forest where they killed many demons like Khar-Dushan etc. Angered by this, Ravana kidnapped Sitaji. Then in search of Sita, Lord Rama left Panchavati and reached Rishyamook mountain and befriended Sugriva. After this, Hanuman and the monkeys started searching for Sita ji. While searching for them, he saw the vulture king Sampati. Seeing the monkeys, Sampati asked their identity and said, “Who are you?” How did you get to this forest? Who sent you?

Hearing Sampati’s words, the monkeys replied that Dashrath had reached the Dandak forest along with Nandan Ramji, Sita and Lakshman ji. Where his wife Sitaji has been kidnapped. Hi, friend! We don’t know where Sita is?

Sampati said that being servants of Ramchandra, all of you are our friends. I know the person who kidnapped Sita ji. My younger brother Jatayu lost his life to save Sita ji. There is a sea a short distance from here and on the other side of the sea there is a city of demons. Sita ji is sitting under the Ashoka tree. Sita ji is still visible to me. Hanuman ji is the most powerful among all monkeys. Therefore, they should go there, because only Hanuman ji can cross this huge ocean with his strength.

After listening to Sampati, Hanuman ji asked: O Sampati! How can I cross this vast ocean? If all our monkeys can’t cross it, how can I cross it alone? Sampati replied to Hanuman ji that, O friend, you fast on Ganesh Chaturthi, the destroyer of troubles. With the effect of that fast you will cross the ocean in a moment.

Only on the advice of Sampati, Lord Hanuman observed the best fast of Sankat Chaturthi. Due to its effect, Hanuman ji crossed the ocean in a moment. Therefore, there is no other fast in this world as pleasant as this one.
