On the morning of November 18, 2024, i.e. Monday, the PM 2.5 level was 907. This is the claim of IQAir Pollution Monitors. This level is 60 times higher than the daily limit established by the WHO. That means deadly. Last week, AQI broke all records in Lahore. The pollution level there was more than the year 1900. What is the main reason for pollution in Delhi?
The location of Delhi is such that it has to suffer this pain every year. The main reason for local pollution in Delhi is the rapid increase in the number of vehicles. Industrial Units. Construction continues underway. Mountains of garbage burning 24 hours a day. Diesel engine. Air conditioners and thermal plants.
In the year 2000, there were only 34 lakh vehicles in Delhi. Which has increased to over 1.22 crore in 2021-22. While vehicles over 15 years old are prohibited. Despite this, around 80 lakh vehicles ply on Delhi roads every day. Due to which poisonous gases like carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide are released.
Natural system to prevent pollution around landlocked Delhi
Now if we talk about location, Rajasthan is in the west of Delhi, Pakistan-Afghanistan in the northwest, Punjab-Haryana in the north, Uttarakhand in the east. That means the national capital is closed to the sea from all sides. The dust arrives with the winds blowing from Pakistan-Afghanistan and Rajasthan. Which is accompanied by stubble smoke.
This smoke is coming from the districts of Punjab-Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. After this the cold. That means less speed in the winds. Too much humidity. The Himalayas avoid stubble dust and smoke. Due to which a layer of smog and fog is visible from all over Delhi to the plains of northern India. Hard. That’s why there is pollution. Also, accidents occur on the roads due to fog.
Every day 11 thousand tons of garbage is generated in Delhi… it is also burned in the mountains.
According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation, 11 thousand tons of garbage are generated in different areas of the capital. It goes to Ghazipur and Okhla landfills. Three and two ton biomining projects will be implemented in both places. Not only this, there are many industries in the Delhi-NCR area where 17 lakh tonnes of coal is used annually. The burning of which causes high greenhouse gas emissions.
