A new chapter has begun in the defense partnership between India and the South American country Guyana. Two Hindustan 228-201 aircraft purchased from India entered service with the Guyana Defense Forces on Monday. The Prime Minister of Guyana, Mark Phillips, presided over the commissioning ceremony. During this period, Indian Ambassador Amit Telang was also present. This has happened for the first time at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Guyana.
Before concluding his three-country tour from Brazil, Prime Minister Modi’s last stop will be Guyana. Where Guyana’s strategic partnership with India is now ready to take another major leap. Guyana had purchased two Dornier HAL-228 aircraft from India earlier this year. The delivery of the aircraft is part of the growing defense cooperation between Guyana and India. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 50 years.
Will be able to solve problems- PM of Guyana
Shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, Guyana officially inducted the Hindustan 228-201 aircraft into the Air Force. The commissioning ceremony was held at London’s Tymhari Air Station. This is the first defense loan granted to a Caribbean country. This is also important in relation to the security scenario of this region. It also reflects India’s growing role as an important partner.
The Prime Minister of Guyana, Mark Phillips, highlighted the importance of these aircraft at the commissioning ceremony. He said that this implementation does not happen alone. This is part of a broader vision by the Government of Guyana to transform our Defense Force into a modern, multi-faceted institution. With this we will be able to solve a series of emerging challenges. The decision to purchase the aircraft is aimed at further strengthening defense systems.
Maritime and air surveillance capabilities will be reinforced
The Government of India has provided Guyana with a defense assistance loan worth $23.37 million. In this context, Guyana had purchased two aircraft at the beginning of the year. This is an important step in the modernization of Guyana’s military infrastructure. The Dornier aircraft, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), are designed to strengthen Guyana’s maritime and air surveillance capabilities.
