On November 19, 1969, the great Brazilian footballer Pelé scored his 1,000th professional goal in a match against Vasco da Gama at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro. This was a major achievement in his illustrious career, which included three World Cup championships.
Pelé, considered one of the best footballers of all time. Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born in 1940 in Tres Coraocos, Brazil. He received the nickname Pele since his childhood. However, this name has no meaning in its original Portuguese.
He played a World Cup match at age 17 and won
As a teenager, he played for a minor league football club in Bauru, São Paulo state, and in 1956 he joined the major league Santos Football Club in the city of São Paulo. There he played as an inside left forward. Two years later, he led the Brazilian team to victory in the World Cup. Pelé, who was only 17 years old, scored two goals to defeat Sweden in the final.

Pelé was blessed with speed, balance, control, power and an uncanny ability to anticipate the movements of his opponents and teammates. He was only five feet eight inches tall, but on the field he was a stalwart, leading Santos to three national club championships, two South American championships and the world club title in 1963.
Pelé led Brazil to the World Cup three times
Under Pelé’s leadership, Brazil won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups. In 1970, Brazil received permanent possession of the Jules Rimet World Cup Trophy in recognition of its dominance. On November 19, 1969, Pelé scored his 1,000th goal from a penalty against Vasco da Gama. Eighty thousand fans cheered them on at the Maracaná stadium, even though Santos was the opposing team.
Retirement announced in 1974
Pelé announced his retirement in 1974, but accepted a $7 million contract to play for the New York Cosmos in 1975. He led the Cosmos to the league championship in 1977 and did much to promote soccer in the United States. On October 1, 1977, at Giants Stadium, he played his last professional game in a Cosmos game against his former team Santos.

He died on December 29, 2022
During his long career, Pelé scored 1,282 goals in 1,363 games. In 1978, Pelé received the International Peace Prize and in 1993 he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Since retiring, he has served as an international ambassador for his sport and worked with the United Nations and UNICEF to promote international peace and reconciliation through friendly athletic competition. He died on December 29, 2022 at the age of 82.
