Rome, Tuesday, November 19, 2024 (Vatican News): The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, together with their colleagues, are actively nurturing their own “creation corners” in honor of the time of creation. Through vibrant images and videos, from balcony gardens in Louisville, Kentucky, to rural farms in India, they have captured a variety of settings and initiatives that align with the 2024 theme, “Hope and Action with Creation Are aligned”.

The purpose of the Harvest Bounty video is to celebrate the generosity and goodness of our Creator and highlight the “first fruits of hope” that symbolize this year’s season of creation, which ran from September 1 to October 4. The video invites viewers to participate with gratitude and teaches hope through the peace and joy of creation.

For the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, caring for the land has long been a core value. At its 2018 General Assembly, the Community decided to intensify its response to the ecological crisis, particularly in view of the rapid destruction of natural resources.

Dharmasama’s commitment to ecological sustainability reflects this priority, as it aims to model sustainable and regenerative living.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Recognizing the serious threat of climate change, the nuns have committed to eliminating their greenhouse gas emissions by 2037 in the United States and Belize and by 2047 in India, Nepal and Botswana.

This commitment is in line with its mission to limit global warming to 1.5°C by 2100, with special concern for the poor and marginalized people most vulnerable to climate impacts.

Eliminating single-use plastics

In response to the dangers of single-use plastics to waterways, habitats and global communities, the nuns have pledged to reject purchasing plastic products and focus on reuse and sustainable alternatives.

proper use of water

The sisters and their associates consider water a sacred resource and are actively working to use it responsibly, showing deep respect for ecological balance and recognizing the growing need for conservation.

Promoting wildlife habitat and carbon sequestration

Recognizing biodiversity as God’s creation entrusted to humanity, the Sisters of Charity actively support native habitats on their lands to promote biodiversity and carbon sequestration, thus preventing species loss around the world.

As one of many religious communities dedicated to caring for the earth, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth collaborate with environmental organizations to increase their impact. His example is an inspiring testimony of faith-based ecological action, encouraging others to have hope and act in harmony with creation.
