Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday apologized for his alleged objectionable comments against women. A day earlier, the Punjab State Women Commission had issued her a show-cause notice in the matter. Channi told reporters that if anyone’s feelings have been hurt, I apologize with folded hands.
“I’m not against anyone”
He also clarified that it would never occur to him to say anything bad against women. Channi, a Lok Sabha member from Jalandhar, further said, “I am not against anyone. I apologize to all the women who have been hurt.” The controversy began when Channi allegedly made derogatory statements against women and two communities during Congress candidate Amrita Wadding’s campaign for the Gidderbaha assembly by-elections. This statement went viral on social media.
Show cause notice issued
Following this, the Punjab State Women Commission, taking suo motu cognizance, issued a show cause notice to Charanjit Singh Channi. Commission Chairman Raj Lali Gill had asked Channi to respond within a day. Gill warned that if Channi did not respond within a day, the Director General of Police would be directed to lodge an FIR against him. Condemning Channi’s statement, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party criticized him for making incorrect comments against women. (Language)
