What is the story of Mohammad Karim Chaudhary?

Karimganj district (now Shribhoomi) is situated in southern Assam and borders Tripura and Bangladesh. It is one of the three districts that form the Barak Valley region and was part of Sylhet district before the partition of India.

According to Bengali writer and historian Achyut Charan Chaudhary, Karimganj is named after a Bengali Muslim landowner who had a special status during his time. It was Muhammad Karim Chaudhary. Karim Chaudhary had laid the foundation of a market, which was called Karimganj. The entire district was named Karimganj after that market.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the name of Karimganj district will be changed to ‘Shrebhoomi’ in honor of Rabindranath Tagore. He wrote on social media: More than 100 years ago, Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore had described the modern Karimganj district of Assam as ‘Shri Bhoomi’, the land of Mother Lakshmi. Now Karimganj will be known as Shribhoomi. Now the cabinet has accepted the demand of the local population.

Local media reports also cite a plan to rename villages, towns and districts with modern Assamese names. The Chief Minister is also said to have talked about changing the name of Kala Pahad in Guwahati to Neelachal Nagar.

Why was the name changed?

The local media report quoted the Chief Minister as saying that we are gradually changing the names of those places which lack historical mention or meaning in the dictionary. Kalapahar has no historical importance. it doesn’t make sense. The word ‘Kalapahad’ does not appear in Assamese or Bengali dictionaries, nor in ‘Karimganj’. Place names are generally rooted in linguistic meaning and many such names have already been modified, including those of several villages like Bhasoni Chowk in Barpeta.

Local media reports, quoting the statements of the Assam Chief Minister, say that the names of several villages, towns and districts are being changed to modern Assamese names with no communal connection.
