Of the 39 children who were rescued in the fire that broke out in the NICU ward of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College, Jhansi, on Friday night, three more children died on Wednesday night, taking the death toll to 15. Giving information, Medical College Principal Dr Narendra Singh Sengar said that these three children died between Tuesday night and Wednesday night.
He said 10 children had previously died from asphyxiation and burns in the fire, while the five children who lost their lives recently suffered from serious illnesses. One of these children weighed only 800 grams at birth, while the other had a hole in his heart.
There was a fire on Friday night.
Ten newborn babies died in a massive fire in the NICU ward of Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College on Friday night. After receiving information about the incident, police and army personnel reached the spot. The fire was so intense that the soldiers could not enter due to the flames, but they later managed to save some children by breaking windows and doors.
After the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance and announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the dead children and Rs 50,000 each to the families of the injured children. Giving information about the assistance amount, Jhansi DM Avinash Kumar said that the amount has been sent to the accounts of the families of 9 out of 10 children.
A magisterial investigation was also ordered
After the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the medical college and met the families of the dead children. Terming the incident extremely unfortunate, he said the government is making efforts along with the families to ensure the identity of the deceased.
Ordering a probe into this matter, the deputy CM had said it would be probed at three levels. The health department will conduct an administrative investigation into the incident, the police administration will also investigate, and the fire department will conduct a separate investigation. Pathak had also ordered a magisterial inquiry into this incident.
