Punjab News (Aaj Samaj), Chandigarh: State Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema once again acknowledged the importance of Cooperative Department in the economic development of the state and said that it is the Cooperative Department that is playing an important role in making the state economically prosperous. . During this, he said that to strengthen the cooperative movement and expand capital, the Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and especially the Finance Department are providing full support to the department. He addressed the closing ceremony of the 71st All India Cooperative Week.
Launch of product portal for women.
On this occasion, she also unveiled the new products of Phulkari and Verka, a web portal developed by the Department of Cooperatives to provide a global sales platform for women’s products made by Phulkaris. He also presented a coffee table book prepared by the Department of Cooperation. Addressing the meeting, the Finance Minister said that at the time of government formation in 2022, Sugarfed had liabilities of over Rs 400 crore.
In the last two years, this institution has been freed from liabilities and strengthened financially. As a result, the area under sugarcane cultivation has increased from 50,429 hectares in 2022-23 to 56,391 hectares in 2024-25. He informed that a 14 MW cogeneration plant was operated at Bhogpur Cooperative Sugar Mill from rice straw, generating a revenue of Rs 15.31 crore in 2023-24.

Milkfed is doing a commendable job in milk production.
Describing Milkfed as one of the top three dairy agencies in the country, he said that during the financial year 2023-2024, Milkfed achieved a record purchase of 31 lakh liters of milk per day. On this occasion, he also inaugurated the 50 MTPT By-Pass Protein Plant, commissioned on December 2, 2023, at Verka Livestock Feeding Plant, Bangar in Ghaniyan and Fermented Milk Processing and Packaging Plant with capacity up to 50,000LPD at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary Clinic and Ludhiana University of Animal Sciences. A special mention was made of the unit. On this occasion, the Finance Minister also launched Verka’s new products such as Sugar Free Kheer, Sugar Free Milk Cake and 1 liter plastic jar of Sugar Free Peo Protein and Goka Ghee.
