The Karnataka government has considerably increased the rates of hospitals in the state. In Karnataka, treatment and diagnostic tests have become costlier by 20 per cent in hospitals under the Medical Education Department. Rates for many services have also doubled. The fee hike has come into effect at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) hospitals and several autonomous medical education institutions in Karnataka. What did the officials say?

BMCRI officials informed TOI that the fees for treatment, surgery, various blood tests and scans have been revised. Officials say the last revision of tariffs took place 5 or 6 years ago. This increase will help in the maintenance of hospitals. Officials have called it a minor rate increase. He said not all tests and treatments are 20% more expensive, some blood tests are still free.

Where and how much did rates increase?

According to TOI, after the fee revision, the fee for special ward (2 patients) has been increased from Rs 750 to Rs 1,000. The rate for the special room with single bed has been increased from Rs 750 to Rs 2,000. The general custody fees have increased from Rs 15 to Rs 20. The OPD registration fee has been doubled from Rs 10 to Rs 20.

As per the amended rules, the registration fee for inpatients has been increased from Rs 25 to Rs 50 and the bed fee for patients has been increased from Rs 30 to Rs 50. The fee for autopsy, medical examination, injury certificate and fitness certificate has been increased from Rs 250 to Rs 300. The price of medical board certificate has now increased from Rs 350 to Rs 500. Apart from this, new charges of Rs 50 for dietary advice and Rs 100 for diet-related advice have been added.
