Nizam Khan, son of Badlol Lodi, succeeded his father on 17 July 1489 with the title of Sultan Sikandar Shah. As soon as he ascended the throne, he established his dominance by defeating in battle his rivals, uncle Alam Khan and Isa Khan, his nephew Azam Humayun and Sardar Tatar Khan of Jalra. He launched a campaign against his own elder brother, Barbak Shah, to capture Jaunpur and was successful. In 1494 AD, he defeated Hussainshah Sharqi in a battle near Banaras and made Bihar also a part of Delhi. Sikandar Lodi also conquered Rajput states like Dholpur, Utagiri, Mandrel, Narwar and Nagaur, but could not capture Gwalior.
The educated sultan used to patronize scholars.
Historians say that Sikandar Lodi was an educated scholar and also a patronized scholar. Scholars of different castes from many countries, including Arabia, used to come to his court, to whom he also granted scholarships. He also managed to translate many Sanskrit texts into Persian. He himself composed poems under the pseudonym Gulrukhi and also wrote a book on music, Lajjat-e-Sikandarshahi. It is said that he used to argue with scholars at night. Normally, 70 scholars would sit under his bed and discuss different topics.

Mosques were built by demolishing temples.
Sikandar Lodi had also tried to convert mosques into educational centers like government institutions. During his reign, a large number of Hindus also learned Persian and achieved high positions in the Sultanate. Despite this, he was not religiously tolerant. Sikandar Lodi is said to have demolished temples and built mosques. One historian has even written that this Sultan of Delhi had broken the idol of the Jwalamukhi temple situated in Nagarkot and distributed its pieces among the butchers so that they could weigh the meat. Not only this, he again imposed the Jaziya tax on the Hindus. When a Brahmin said that both Hindus and Muslims were equally holy, he was hanged.

Sikandar Lodi is known for his renovation works. He invented an authentic scale for measuring the earth, known as Gaj-e-Sikandari. It was 30 inches long. Sikandar Lodi had removed octroi and other trade taxes on grains. Thanks to this, along with cereals, clothing and other basic necessities became cheaper. He had also removed zakat from grains. If someone found a treasure buried in the ground, they would not participate in it. He started the system of free food for the poor. The tax on internal trade was also abolished.
