The Supreme Court on Thursday said it will hear after eight weeks a petition seeking a ban on a website that features jokes on members of the Sikh community and portrays them in a bad light. “This is an important case,” said a bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan.

Ridiculous about women’s clothing.

Petitioner Harvinder Chaudhary informed the court that she would consolidate her suggestions and those of other parties in the case and file a written submission. The court gave him eight weeks’ time and posted the matter for further hearing. During the hearing, Chaudhary highlighted complaints from women in the Sikh community who were ridiculed for their dress. Apart from this, he also spoke about the problems related to Sikh children in schools. The bank said: “Prepare a small compilation so that it is easy to read.”

More than 5,000 websites mentioned

The high court agreed to hear the petition in October 2015, following which more petitions raising similar allegations were filed. The petitioner had earlier mentioned that there were more than 5,000 websites that displayed jokes about Sikhs and presented a bad image to members of the community. The petition said that these websites displaying jokes about Sikhs should be banned for violating the fundamental right to life and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution.
