West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced the launch of a “complete reshuffle” in the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and accused a section of lower-level police officers of engaging in corrupt practices. He also directed Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar to investigate the “complaints” received against some CID officers and take action if found to be genuine.

“I will initiate a complete reorganization in the CID,” Banerjee said at a meeting at state secretariat ‘Nabanna’. I am giving you (Kumar) the responsibility. Give me proposals and investigate complaints. Sometimes false complaints are also filed. If they are found to be genuine, strict action must be taken. Don’t forgive me even if it’s necessary.

The police will not tolerate accepting bribes

Banerjee is also the state home minister. He also asked Kumar to take steps to strengthen the Special Task Force (STF) and Anti-Corruption Bureau. “I will not tolerate a section of police and CISF taking bribes, indulging in theft of coal, cement and sand and then people blaming the Trinamool Congress,” he said.

CPI(M) surge to CBI office

On November 21, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and an organization associated with it staged a demonstration to the CBI office. Expressing displeasure over the delay in the CBI probe into the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital three months ago, the CBI on Thursday organized a demonstration at the central agency’s office near Salt Lake. Carrying red flags, thousands of CPI(M) workers and members of its youth wing DYFI and student wing SFI marched about two kilometers from Ultadanga to the CBI office.

The rally was led by CPI(M) Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty and the party’s State Secretary Mohammad Salim. Chakraborty said, “It has been more than 100 days (in the doctor rape and murder case). But the CBI has not been able to trace the people or those directly involved in this heinous crime except a key accused, Sanjay Roy , who conspired Doing this has tarnished the image of Bengal.” “We have perceived a nexus between the BJP government at the Center and the TMC-led government to protect those involved in the case. “We will continue in the streets until we get justice,” he said.
