A court in Odisha’s Kalahandi district convicted six people who gang-raped a woman five years ago and sentenced them to life imprisonment. While in this case three defendants were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Government lawyer Purna Chandra Nag said Dharamgarh Additional District and Sessions Judge Suresh Chandra Pradhan delivered a major verdict in this case on Wednesday after examining the witnesses and evidence. The convicted accused include Lalindra Sabar, Labanya Chhatriya, Anirudh Chhatriya, Prakash Naik, Santa Naik and Amit Naik.
State lawyer Purna Chandra Nag also said that three other accused, who had made the video of this crime viral on social media, have been released due to lack of evidence.
According to the government lawyer, the victim was returning home from Bhawanipatna city in September 2019 and Lalindra Sabar, who knew the woman at the time, had offered her a lift on his motorcycle. The woman had accepted it. Then, while returning home, the man along with his associates took the woman to the roadside forest and raped her.
The government lawyer said that the accused also recorded a video of this incident and made the video clip viral on social media. He said that later Junagadh police registered a case based on the complaint of the victim’s parents and arrested all the accused one by one.
