(Society Today), Georgetown/Bridgetown/: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on the sidelines of the India-CARICOM Summit in Georgestown, the capital of Guyana, and thanked the government and people of Barbados for conferring on him the award of the Honorary Order of the Freedom of Barbados.

fruitful meeting with motley

I had a very good meeting with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, said Prime Minister Modi in a post on social media platform climate change and agriculture. Modi said: I thank the government and people of Barbados for conferring on me the Honorary Order of the Freedom of Barbados. This honor is dedicated to the people of India.

Earlier, speaking to the media, Prime Minister Mottley had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit is a historic moment for CARICOM countries and he is honored to participate in this summit. He said: I think we are all happy to have this opportunity to meet Prime Minister Modi. It is a historic moment for most of us in CARICOM to be able to meet with CARICOM-India at the Heads of Government level.

The last time we met at the United Nations General Assembly

The Prime Minister of Barbados said the last time the two leaders met was during the United Nations General Assembly. He said the talks between them reflect the strength of relations between the two regions. India and Barbados enjoy close and cordial relations and actively interact in the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the Non-Aligned Movement and other international forums.

About 3,000 people of Indian origin in Barbados

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that Barbados has been supporting India’s candidacy in various multilateral forums, including elections to various United Nations bodies. There are approximately 3,000 people of Indian origin settled in Barbados and most of them have acquired local citizenship.
