In the first Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, apart from Nitish Reddy and Rishabh Pant, who made their Test debut on the first day, no batsman could play sustainably. Thus, on the first day in Perth, hosts Australia defeated India by just 150 runs in the first innings until the tea break. The Indian team could not even play 50 overs. Captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and decided to bat first on a bouncing green pitch. Pant (37 runs off 78 balls) and Reddy formed a partnership of 48 runs for the seventh wicket, thanks to which team India managed to reach the score of 150 runs. Australia’s most successful bowler was Josh Hazlewood who dismissed 4 Indian batsmen. While Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh took 2 wickets each.

Bumrah wreaked havoc with the ball

In response to India’s 150 runs, Australia’s innings got off to a very poor start. Nathan McSweeney, playing his first Test match, became Bumrah’s victim in the third over himself. After this, Bumrah bowled his fourth over in the seventh over in which he changed the game. In this over, Bumrah bowled brilliantly and made Usman Khawaja his first victim in the fourth ball. While bowling from around the wicket, Bumrah bowled a good length ball on the line of stump, which after falling went out instead of coming in at an angle. Usman Khawaja could not understand this ball and the ball kissed the outer edge of the bat and fell into the hands of Kohli who was at second slip.

Smith is a victim of the golden duck

The Australian team was yet to recover from the shock of Khawaja’s wicket when Bumrah caused a stir by dismissing veteran Steve Smith, who came to the crease as a new batsman, on his first ball. In this way, Australia’s best batsman returned to the pavilion after leaving with a golden duck. With this, Jasprit Bumrah created a new record. Jasprit Bumrah has become the second bowler in the world to have achieved the great feat of dismissing Steve Smith for a golden duck in a Test. Previously, this achievement was recorded only in the name of former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn. Stan had achieved this great feat in the year 2014. Now Bumrah’s name has also been included in this special club of Stan.
