BJP workers celebrating victory
The NDA achieved a landslide victory in the by-elections to eight assembly constituencies in three northeastern states. In Assam, the Bharatiya Janata Party won three seats – Behali, Dholai and Samaguri, while BJP allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) retained the Bongaigaon and Sidli seats. At the same time, despite being out of the BJP-led government in Manipur, the NDA’s ally party, the National People’s Party (NPP), wrested a Congress seat from Gambegre in Meghalaya, while the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha won Namchi-Singithang and Soreng Chakung in Sikkim in October won unopposed constituencies.
BJP hoisted flag at Congress stronghold
The BJP registered its first victory in Samaguri, a Congress stronghold. It was estimated that the Congress would maintain its dominance in this seat. The seat was vacated by Rakibul Hussain, who had become the party’s MP from Dhubri. Instead, BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah defeated Congress candidate Tanjeel Hussain’s son. The Congress took responsibility for the defeat in Assam. By not allowing any of his colleagues to participate in the Behali constituency elections. The seat was retained by the BJP, whose candidate Digant Ghatowal defeated Congress candidate Jayant Bora.
Congress targeted BJP and its candidate
Before the Dholai by-election, the Congress targeted the BJP and Nihar Ranjan Das, with the Congress alleging that he is a Bangladeshi. However, he retained the BJP seat by defeating his Congress rival Dhrubjyoti Purkayastha. In Bongaigaon, AGP candidate Deeptimayi Choudhary defeated Congress candidate Brajenjit Singha. Mrs Chaudhary is the wife of veteran AGP leader Phani Bhushan Chaudhary, who left the post after becoming MP from Barpeta. In Sidali, UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma defeated Bodoland People’s Front’s Sudho Kumar Basumatary by a record margin of 37,016 votes.
Conrado K. Sangma’s wife won the elections.
In Meghalaya, Mehtab Chandi A. of the ruling NPP party. Sangma won the Gambegre seat. Mehtab Chandi A. Chief Minister Conrad K. She is Sangma’s wife. Earlier, this headquarters used to be a Congress bastion. Mehtab Chandi A. Sangma defeated Sadhyarani M. Sangma of the Trinamool Congress, wife of former minister Zenith Sangma. Mehtab Sangma said: “The Gambegre results have confirmed the people’s confidence in the party. Meeting their expectations is now a great challenge.” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the NDA’s victory in Assam is “a resounding testimony of Assam’s unwavering support” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of good governance and development.
