Sambhal Jama Masjid Case, (Aaj Samaj), Lucknow: Tension spread today regarding the poll of Jama Masjid located in Sambhal town of Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh. In fact, it has been claimed that Jama Masjid is the temple of Harihar and this morning when the team reached there to conduct their survey again, the angry crowd created a ruckus.
Stones were thrown at several places and many vehicles were burnt. When the situation worsened, the police had to resort to lathi charge. The situation could only be controlled by launching tear gas bombs. Police and agents have also been injured during the clashes. A heavy police force has been deployed around the mosque.
Police said that around 6 am, Sambhal DM Rajendra Pansia and Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Vishnoi had reached Jama Masjid with the inspection team. After this, the survey of Jama Masjid began in the presence of court commissioner Ramesh Radhav and when the people of the area got information about this, a large number of people from the Muslim community gathered outside the mosque and started creating riot.
People from the Muslim community were angry with the early morning poll on a public holiday. Despite persuasion from police and administrative officials, the crowd was not controlled and people began throwing stones and setting vehicles on fire. The angry crowd was stopping the police. Many police officers were injured due to stone pelting. Seeing the situation getting out of control, the police attempted to disperse the crowd using mild force, but the situation got out of control and the police fired tear gas.
