Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Harvinder Kalyan has been unanimously elected Speaker of the Haryana Assembly. Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini had proposed Kalyan’s name in the House. BJP MLA Ranbir Gangwa has supported this proposal.
Harvinder Kalyan became the 18th Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
Protem president Raghubir Singh Kadian announced Harvinder Kalyan’s appointment after other parties did not raise opposition. With this election, Kalyan, 57, becomes the 18th speaker of the 15th Haryana Assembly.
Harvinder Kalyan was in BSP before BJP
Harvinder Kalyan is a three-time MLA from Gharaunda in Karnal district. Kalyan, a resident of Kutail village in Karnal, began his political journey with the Youth Congress before joining the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). He contested the 2009 assembly elections on the BSP ticket and also lost. After this he joined the BJP.
BJP won in 2014, 19 and now in 2024
Harvinder Kalyan won from the Gharaunda seat in the 2014 assembly elections. This year, the BJP also formed the government in Haryana. His Badal Kalyan retained his seat by winning from Gharaunda in 2019 and 2024.

At the same time, the Chief Minister and his party MPs congratulated Harvinder Kalyan for taking over as Assembly Speaker. Along with this, Congress MLAs including Bhupendra Singh Hooda, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MLAs Aditya Devi Lal and Arjun Chautala have also congratulated him.
MLAs took oath
Earlier, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other newly elected MPs took oath as members of the 15th state assembly. Protem president and senior Congress leader Raghuveer Singh Kadian administered oath to the newly elected MLAs.
