What 21-year-old Sarfaraz from a small village of Egra in West Bengal has achieved is truly praiseworthy. There was a time when he was a common worker earning a daily wage of ₹300, but today he was admitted as a medical student in Neel Ratan Medical College, Kolkata, after clearing the NEET 2024 exam. Sarfaraz’s three big dreams were Join the Indian Army, become a cricketer and become a doctor. His first two dreams were shattered due to financial reasons, but he worked hard to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.
Sarfaraz shared his story of struggle with India Today Today: “I used to work 8 hours and earned Rs 300. During the Covid-19 lockdown, I had to work to support my family. At that time, “I used to work with my father and I have 7 hours to prepare for NEET. The rest of the time I used it to sleep and do housework.”
Sarfaraz used to support his family by working as a daily wage labourer.
Sarfaraz’s journey began in 2022, when he supported his family by lifting 400 bricks a day. He said, “My mother wanted me to be a doctor. I worked hard to fulfill her wish and managed to defeat NEET in the third attempt, but the journey was very difficult. Night after night I used to think about this difficult battle. I used to cry thinking about it “
mother’s dream fulfilled
Sarfaraz further said that I had three dreams. Firstly, I wanted to be a defense officer, secondly, I wanted to be a cricketer and thirdly, my mother’s dream was to be a doctor, and now it has come true. I needed money for cricket and defense and that was the reason I gave up both dreams. Once during the NDA practical exam, I had an accident.

Sarfaraz credits his family, school teachers, private tutors and physics teacher for his success. He said that the sources of inspiration for me were my father, my mother, my private tutors who taught me for free, my school teachers and the physics scholarship. Sarfaraz had the opportunity to buy a phone with government help during the pandemic. He expanded his preparation using YouTube videos and Wala Physics courses. Sarfaraz now lives in a Prime Minister Awas Yojana house and takes care of his mother and younger brother along with his father.
Sarfaraz wants to offer free education to poor children
Now, as a medical student, Sarfaraz dreams of providing free education and health services to poor children. He said I know what I have endured, I have borrowed books and struggled to get food. My mother always inspired me to provide free education to poor children. I will leave my town and city.
Sarfaraz also said that I know what I have suffered. At times when we had difficulty getting food, I used to borrow books from other people, but my mother always supported me. My mother said that in the future I should give free education to poor children and I will complete it. That’s why I want to be successful and by becoming a doctor I will be able to provide free health services to people. Everyone supported me a lot and that is why I will start first from my town and my city. Sarfaraz’s story has become a symbol of hard work, struggle and bravery. He shows that if the will is strong and we have the support of the family, no difficult path can stop us.
