India’s aviation sector is growing rapidly. To accelerate this sector, the central government is also preparing new airports. The government plans to build 100 new airports in the country in the next 10 years. Due to this, there will be a record increase in the number of air passengers in the country. However, its trailer has already begun to appear. India’s domestic air passenger traffic rose 5.3 per cent to 1.36 crore in October 2024. Aviation regulator DGCA provided this information in monthly data released on Tuesday. In October last year, the number of passengers on domestic flights was 1.26 crore.

In the same month, low-cost airline IndiGo carried 86.40 lakh passengers and achieved a market share of 63.3 per cent. This was followed by Tata Group’s Air India and Vistara. 26.48 lakh passengers traveled on Air India flights and 12.43 lakh passengers traveled on Vistara. Air India’s figures include passengers traveling on its low-cost Air India Express unit.

According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the market share of Air India (including Air India Express) was 19.4 per cent and the market share of Vistara was 9.1 per cent during October 2024. Notably, Vistara also merged with Air India on November 12. In the month under review, SpiceJet carried 3.35 lakh passengers and Akasa Air carried 6.16 lakh passengers.
