The co-founder of the Essar Group, Shashi Ruia, passed away after a prolonged illness. Family sources said Ruia died on November 25 at 11:55 pm in Mumbai. According to PTI News, he had returned from the United States for treatment about a month ago. His mortal remains will be kept at Ruia House for the last darshan from 1 pm to 3 pm on Tuesday. The funeral procession will leave Ruia House towards Hindu Worli Crematorium at 4 pm.

Industrialist Shashi Ruia, 80, along with his brother Ravikant Ruia (also known as Ravi Ruia), founded Essar Group in 1969, a company engaged in businesses ranging from metal to technology. Shashikant Ruia started his career in the year 1965 under the guidance of his father Nand Kishore Ruia and laid the foundation of Essar in 1969 by constructing an outer breakwater at the Chennai port. Essar Group currently operates in many sectors including steel, oil refining, exploration and production, telecommunications, energy and construction.
