One Nation, One Subscription: Center approves ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ scheme

Modi Govt One Nation One Subscription, (Aaj Samaj), New Delhi: The Central Government has approved the ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ plan. The plan was given the green light on Monday at the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to an official statement, this central sector scheme aims to provide nationwide access to academic research articles and journal publications. A budget allocation of Rs 6,000 crore has been approved for the scheme, covering calendar years 2025, 2026 and 2027.

It is expected to boost research and innovation.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnav announced that the ‘One Nation One Membership’ scheme will use a completely digital and user-friendly process. He said this will ensure easy access to higher education institutions and central government research and development laboratories. Ashwini Vaishnav said the initiative is expected to boost research and innovation by optimizing access to educational resources across the country.

Main points of the plan.

  • The One Nation One Subscription program aims to increase access to academic resources and promote a research-oriented culture in India’s academic sector.
  • This initiative will complement existing efforts such as the National Research Foundation (ANRF) to promote research and innovation in universities, colleges and government R&D laboratories.
  • Coordinated by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), an autonomous inter-university center of the UGC, the scheme will benefit more than 6,300 higher education institutions and research centers managed by the central or state governments.
  • This nationwide membership will benefit approximately 1.8 million students, teachers and researchers. This is in line with the objectives of VikasBharat@2047, National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and National Research Foundation (ANRF).
  • This initiative will expand the reach of academic journals to the vast diaspora community of students, teachers, researchers and scientists across disciplines, including Tier 2 and 3 cities.
  • ANRF will periodically review the use of ‘One Nation One Subscription’ and publications by Indian authors by these institutions.
