Justice Kuldip Singh: Former Supreme Court ‘Green Justice’ Kuldeep Singh passes away

Former Supreme Court Justice Kuldip Singh, (Aaj Samaj), Chandigarh: Former Supreme Court judge Justice Kuldeep Singh, popularly known as the ‘Green Judge’ for his pioneering work in environmental laws, has passed away. He was 92 years old. After a brief illness, he breathed his last in Chandigarh on Monday night.

Justice Kuldeep Singh’s last rites were held at the Sector 25 cremation ground in Chandigarh on Tuesday at 3 pm. He was born on January 1, 1932 in Jhelum, present-day Pakistan. He graduated in Law and enrolled as an advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1959. He served as Advocate General of Punjab from May to August 1987.

Appointed judge of the Supreme Court in December 1988

Justice Kuldeep Singh was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on December 14, 1988 and retired on December 21, 1996. During his tenure in the apex court, Justice Kuldeep Singh was known for setting the benchmark in matters of environmental laws in the country.

After retirement, Justice Kuldeep Singh headed the delimitation panel on realignment of territorial constituencies for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in 2002 and a tribunal to probe land grab cases in Punjab in 2012.
