A senior Maoist commander was killed in an internal dispute of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) in Jharkhand’s Latehar district. The deceased commander has been identified as Chhotu Kherwar, ‘zone commander’ of Palamu division, who had a reward of Rs 15 lakh on his head. The police gave this information on Wednesday.
He was wanted in many serious criminal cases.
Police said the incident took place on Tuesday night in Bhimpal forest in Chipdohar police station area, where other Maoists allegedly killed Chhotu Kherwar. Giving information on the matter, DIG (Palamu Range) YS Ramesh said that after the incident, police were sent to the remote area to recover the body. According to the police, Chhotu Kherwar was wanted in several serious criminal cases. The police have launched an investigation to find out the motive behind the murder and it is also believed that the murder may have occurred due to internal differences within the Maoist organisation.
Two Maoists arrested after encounter
Earlier, two Maoists were arrested after an encounter between police and Maoists in Latehar district. Weapons and ammunition were also seized from them. A senior official said on Tuesday that there was firing between police and members of banned Maoist organization Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) in Sikit-Bandua forest of Herhanj police station area on Monday night.
Latehar Superintendent of Police (SP) Kumar Gaurav said they had received information about the presence of Maoists in Sikit-Bandua forest. He said, “As soon as the Maoists saw the police team, they started firing, following which the police also retaliated. However, taking advantage of the darkness, the Maoists fled into the forest, but their two companions were captured.” He said that during the search operation in the area, three rifles, 96 cartridges and other items belonging to the banned organization were recovered.
