OTT Policy

The government has drafted a new policy to regulate OTT. This was announced by Union Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan on Wednesday, October 23. The Union Minister of State sent the draft policy on OTT for public comments and inputs. After receiving feedback, the policy on content to be shown or broadcast on OTT will be tabled in Parliament. There has been talk of regulating OTT for a long time. Questions have often been raised about the existing self-regulatory guidelines for OTT.

Many complaints received about OTT

The Union Minister of State said that in the current self-regulatory guidelines, OTT service providers only write a disclaimer for the content displayed stating that this content is for mature viewers or the guidance of the parents if necessary. Despite these necessary measures, a large number of complaints have been received regarding the content shown on OTT.

Many complainants have alleged that many OTT platforms are continuously violating the guidelines, in view of which the government has decided to formulate a systematic policy to regulate the content shown on OTT, to ensure that objectionable things cannot be shown on OTT. To do this, feedback is taken from the industry, so that stakeholders and the public can be taken into account.

The news will be broadcast on private FM.

Apart from this, the government is also considering granting permission to private FM channels to publish news bulletins. Currently, news is broadcast only on government radio channel Akashvani i.e. All India Radio. After obtaining permission from private FM radio channels, they will also be able to broadcast news. For this, comments are also being taken from representatives associated with the industry.
