New Delhi. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi took oath as a member of the Lok Sabha on Thursday. She has been elected as a member of the House in the recently concluded by-election to the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. Priyanka took oath in Hindi and during the event held a copy of the Constitution in her hand. When he rose to take oath, Congress MPs raised slogans of “Jodo-Jodo, Bharat Jodo”.
Congress leader Ravindra Basantrao Chavan, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nanded, Maharashtra, was also sworn in as a member of the House. He took oath in Marathi language. The by-election was held in Nanded due to the death of Chavan’s father Basantrao Chavan.
After taking oath, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra greeted Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with folded hands. She greeted the opposition leaders sitting in the front row with folded hands and the leader of the opposition in the House and his brother Rahul Gandhi also accepted Priyanka’s greeting with folded hands. After the oath, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated Priyanka and hugged her.
On the occasion of the oath-taking of the Congress general secretary, her mother and parliamentary party chief Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra, her son Rehaan Rajiv Vadra, her daughter Miraya Vadra, Congress Rajya Sabha member Rajiv Shukla and some party leaders were present in the hearing gallery of the House.
Rahul Gandhi had won from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala in this year’s Lok Sabha elections. He left the Wayanad seat, after which by-elections were held here.
This is the first time that there are three members of the Gandhi-Nehru family in Parliament. Priyanka’s brother Rahul Gandhi is the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and her mother Sonia Gandhi is a Rajya Sabha member. Priyanka won the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election by a margin of over four lakh votes.
He has become a member of any House for the first time. She entered active politics before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and has been serving as the party’s general secretary since then.
