Rain in Sri Lanka

Colombo: At least 12 people have died and more than 3.30 lakh people have been affected in Sri Lanka due to inclement weather following heavy rains in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The authorities provided information in this regard on Thursday. Eight of the dead are said to be from the eastern district of Ampara. Officials said the inclement weather was a result of a deep pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, which mainly affected the eastern province.

Thousands of people were affected

Disaster Management Center (DMC) officials said that as of 8 am local time on Thursday, more than 3,30,000 people from over 98,000 families in 21 districts had been affected. The meteorological center forecast more heavy rain until Friday, while the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) issued a landslide warning for 4 out of 9 provinces on Wednesday. More than 80 houses were completely damaged due to flooding and landslides.
